Solar Eclipse Notice

Monday’s August 21, 2017, solar eclipse has been named The Great American Eclipse because it will be visible across the continental United States. It is the first visible total eclipse in the United States during the twenty-first (21st) century; the next total eclipse will occur in seven (7) years. Mercer County Schools is excited about taking this teachable opportunity and sharing it with our youngsters. Our teachers have been planning for this event for several months. As a result, on Monday, we will be operating on a regular schedule.

In southern West Virginia we will experience approximately ninety (90) percent coverage of the sun by the moon. Therefore, we have considered and teachers have instructed and will continue to instruct the students on the dangers of looking directly at the sun. Because it will be a little darker than normal, you may want to pick your child up after he or she arrives at the bus stop.
We also hope that you will reinforce this learning opportunity with your child. If you would like additional information on the eclipse, you may visit the WVU Planetarium & Observatory website at the following link (http://planetarium.wvu.edu/eclipse) and/or the time and date website which illustrates the path of the eclipse (https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/charleston-wv).
